Making An Invader Zim Costume

Sweet Revenge (I Spit on Your Grave)

Note: This time it was not long after the publication of this review and the premiere of the film in Mexico, but as I had left home page, the back to post for the convenience of readers.

Back in 1978, the film I Spit on Your Grave (also known as Day of the Woman ) caused controversy for its violence, gore, and for daring to show a woman taking revenge into their own hands against the jerks who raped her. Over time it became a cult movie, not so much for their intrinsic values, but for having been censured (or prohibited) in many countries , which only made her more popular. Anyway, I respect their importance within the genre of horror (no doubt laid the foundation for many modern heroines) but within the film of "female revenge", I prefer to work as Thriller: A Cruel Picture and Ms. 45 , because I seem to be better structured, acted and directed.

However, I Spit on Your Grave remains an intense and visceral experience with its manufacturing semi-amateur, rural locations and raw performances. In addition, methods of revenge implemented by the bold character seemed a direct response to nascent slasher film, which added an additional level to the simple narrative. So with all that "baggage cultural "charging I Spit on Your Grave , what would a modern re-make? Given the contemporary horror standards, we can be sure it will be more brutal, cruel and realistic, but can achieve the same impact and emotional historical predecessor, the answer is "No", but it shows that the director Steven R. Monroe and his brave cast tried with genuine energy. And if we forget for a moment the legacy of the original will find that this new version I Spit on Your Grave turns out to be a disturbing, grotesque and satisfying tale of blood, violence and revenge.

The argument is very similar to 1978, although this time he added more details that shape history and change a little the tone of the narrative. At first we meet Jennifer Hill (Sarah Butler), a writer in search of peace and tranquility you would expect in a remote cabin nestled in the woods of Louisiana. Unfortunately, the attractive woman draws the attention of a group of aggressive and ignorant men, after seeing her sunbathing in bikini, invade their cabin with the worst intentions. In a desperate effort to Jennifer manages to escape and find a policeman who can help ... but turns out to be an accomplice of criminals then in a horrible sequence that feels eternal, men take turns to rape her, leaving her then abandoned in the forest. But Jennifer survives, and just have a way to overcome to achieve his dreadful experience ...

As expected, the re-make adds more blood and a couple of new story elements. Some do not lead to anything (for example, the fate of the camera that filmed the crime), but others delve into the private lives of rapists, revealing the hypocrisy of monsters who disguise their evil behind a facade of respectable civilization. However, the change More fundamental is the revenge of Jennifer, as it adds a psychological component that at times reminded me of the elaborate scenarios Saw franchise . Fortunately I Spit on Your Grave remains within the probable, and although the film follows the formula of torture, this time the grotesque cruelty and violence to feel justified and successful. On the other hand, this deliberate attitude remains a bit of suspense and spontaneity of the original film, where the actions of women and their attackers appeared to result from impulsive reactions, not a Machiavellian plan. The difference is subtle but significant, and could not if you say "better" re-make ... but definitely appreciate the creative team's efforts to find a variation that respects the original premise and add new sub-text to prevent it from becoming a hollow exercise in special effects and sexual exploitation.

Speaking of which, there are good effects "gore" in I Spit on Your Grave . Unfortunately not as graphic as I expected and I feel that the director chickened out (even as amended "Unrated") with some scenes that have earned displayed in all its "glory" for the most cathartic effect. Still, this re-make of I Spit on Your Grave seemed like a decent thriller that is a valid use for the clichés of porno-torture, and although it shows its low budget film and some performances, I admit that was better than I expected. The first half of the film is disturbing, distasteful and impossible to "enjoy" definitely cause revulsion in many people, but almost compensates for the successful conclusion what we suffer at first. So despite its successes, not the kind of film that can be recommended for anyone, and only fans find that they can resist horror that deserves to bear the name of its predecessor. This could be a compliment or an insult, depending on the sensitivity of the viewer.
